Wind Power

The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park

Wind Power

Wind is a natural phenomenon caused by the movement of air mass transfer from one place to another. This can be explained by theoretical physics. Wind is a result of the difference in temperature, barometric pressure, strength of the earth’s rotation, obstacles and roughness of the earth surface.

Wind power is a kind of power (Kinetic energy). Man knows how to use wind energy around 5000 BC, until now man paid more attention on wind energy. The principle of generate electricity from wind turbines is similar to the principle of power plant (except solar cell) which produce electricity from electricity generator, that contains two major parts 1) the magnetic north pole – south pole and 2) coil between the poles of a magnet. “ When the coil rotates between the magnetic poles, magnetic field which occurs from magnet will induct electromagnetic in the coil “. Therefore, when the high impact air mass hit the turbine, it spins then the magnetic poles coils connected by shafting with turbine that rotate and generate electricity. It can be seen that a wind turbine converts the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy and generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy itself.

Learning about the use of wind energy to utilise in agriculture aims at learning promotion and understanding of the how to use the clean energy and can be expanded for further result by using wind energy as an alternative fuel in the future. The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park has installed two wind turbines at the following spots:

1. Wind turbines at Bang Tra Noi canal has been installed three sets of one kilowatt (1,000 watts) size low speed wind turbine (Mini Wind Farm System) These wind turbines, generate electricity and charge into twelve batteries used as lighting at night.

2. Wind turbine for pumping water used as a forest restoration in the forest area of the Sirindhorn International Environmental Park by installing two sets of 30 vanes wind turbine type and 24 vanes wind turbines type with 40 watts of pumping water power and the volume of about 21 cubic meters per day.
